Local Mail Transport Solution

Updated 10 May 2005

Comprises 3 Windows services: A POP3 service, SMTP service and Agent service.

Intended for dial-up users.

The POP3 and SMTP servers serve mail on a local machine, while the Agent retrieves mail from and relays mail to, an ISP account.

Allows you to create separate mail accounts on your local machine while using only 1 ISP account with a number of aliases to that account. Link your ISP-supplied email alias to a Windows logon.

Uses components from the Celestial library (included in this zip file).

A little History

The two apps below will run in a DOS box on Windows. Made available here for entertainment value only.

Use them (especially VX, which was intended to copy, move and/or delete  files and directories) at your own risk.

Disk Usage

Based on the Unix du command; this little app recurs down a directory structure, showing the disk space used by each subfolder. Written in C around August 1995.

Safe to use, because it only reads the directory structure.

Source included.

Vortex (VX)

My second-year Assembler project from way-back when I was a student at the Cape Technikon in 1993. A rip-off of Norton Commander (a file manager program that was quite ubiquitous at the time). The app has two panes: the double-line pane shows the source (directory),  the single-lined pane shows the destination. 'Copy' and 'move' functions operate on the source-pane to the destination-pane. 'Delete' function operates on the source-pane.

Over 100 pages of Intel 8086 Assembler code that compiled to a 14k COM program. Was meant to be run on a 1 Meg 80286. I eventually got 67% for the project, due to not having completed 2 of the program's functions (browsing files and something else, I forget what now...).

May not be safe to use - a known bug that occurred when the machine ran out of memory during a 'copy' or 'move', was that the directory structure was written to the wrong destination.

Source included.
